ok, a little question, what kind of mouse is installed on the hyper-v server and how it is connected? ps2 or usb? i am not totally sure, but i think usb connections in usb are not recognised under hyper-v guest. second question, is the mouse directly connected to the server or do u have a mouse- keyboard switch? could evtl also be the problem.Yocan evolve plus xl coils amazon

Turning 'Devices>Mouse Integration' off and on again fixed it. Resizing the host window had no effect for me and changing the pointing device while the VM was running wasn't possible. I've not tried full screen on this occasion, but it certainly seems like a viable fix, as it appears to reset mouse integration.
I did click capture but mouse was not captured. The little "Down arrow" on the right bottom of the VirtualBox window turned "Green" when I clicked "capture". I have said this in a short form in my OP, if the "guest display area" means something else, then you better explain its meaning. According to Microsoft, Ubuntu 16.04 is essentially fully supported under Hyper-V generation 2 VMs. Evidently that is a false assertion, because my keyboard doesn't work in a gen 2 VM. Actually the problem is Hyper-V, since if it just did legacy mouse/keyboard input it would work with any OS regardless. It must have some form of legacy input because it works in i.e. Grub, DOS, the 'F8' menu etc. Just not inside actual windows, then it flicks over to some other method and doesn't work
